22. Mad
After a slightly extended absence, I'm back. I WILL FINISH THIS DANG WRITING CHALLENGE.
Perhaps me screaming the words in my head will result in some form of super conviction that will cause the statement to be true.
I think I've been avoiding this particular word because I didn't want to write about being angry. And the only alternative I could see was writing about being crazy, yet another thing I wasn't particularly wanting to write about.
But now that I think about it a little more I think we're all a bit mad, and that's what keeps us sane. Even though that's a massive contradiction. Think about it though. The things that we do, seemingly out of madness (falling in love, taking risks, randomly picking up and travelling to a strange place, staying up until 4am because you're having a decent chat with a friend) are the ones that keep life fresh and help us to remember that we're free to live, and living doesn't just mean trudging through mud every day and kicking the mud off our shells at the end of the day and wearily falling into bed. If that's all there was to life I don't think God would have bothered creating us. Sorry, that sounds a bit too boring. My God is a lot more fun than that.
The other thing that the word 'mad' makes me think of is Alice in Wonderland. She was perhaps quite mad, following a random rabbit and drinking a random potion-like concoction and following random people around. But I think it turned out pretty well for her.
I guess the whole point of this post is for me to ramble a little, potentially not make a whole lot of sense, and come the long way around to simply saying; I've finally come to terms with the word 'mad', and with being a little mad myself.
On that note, I'll leave you with a quote.

The Mad Hatter: Have I gone mad?
[Alice checks Hatter's temperature]
Alice Kingsley: I'm afraid so. You're entirely bonkers. But I'll tell you a secret. All the best people are.
