20. Tremble
Every time my mum has to go to the hospital I tremble a little. The world slows briefly as I momentarily contemplate an existence without her and all of a sudden I'm not taking in air to stay alive myself.
Every time. Every month. My heart stops, creating silence as if something is commanding it to respect how fleeting life can be.
Every time the phone rings late at night or early in the morning or during a class I flash back to times when those calls have held life or death, when the breath on the other side of the line could be about to warn you that someone else's breathes were numbered.
I have a lot more respect for life than I used to, which causes me to be more cautious with mine in some ways, and far more reckless in others. This life is not one where you should hold back, waiting in the background for someone to talk to you, it's one where you should try your hardest to be brave and take the opportunity to greet someone first. This life is not one where feelings should be held in. If you think someone is the best thing since sliced bread/macaroni cheese/the Internet then perhaps they should know.
Every second is an opportunity for something.
